Today! I!

Watered one of the roses -- I'm currently on a rotation of watering one thing each day, right now that should be enough water for everyone but I think once the new stuff gets in the ground it won't be, so I'll need to reconsider. Also refilled the soap spray and sprayed for aphids, and cut one of the blooms off the joseph's coat to put in my room. It smells very nice!

I still need to figure out, and put the work in to, plant aforementioned new things, but the new rose was supposed to arrive today and now is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Probably it will all get put off to this weekend, broad plan is to get the new rose in the ground next to the outta the blue, to till the area in front of the viking queen and get it planted with marigolds again, to move the pots by the fence and see about putting morning glories in the ground there, and to till a different fence-adjacent spot and put more morning glories there. Unsure about the fruitfulness of some of these plans, but willing to try them out and see how they end up!

I took a shower, I did a full run of vocal warmups, I recorded a couple audition files for Silt Verses and hope to do another couple tomorrow before I send them off. I made myself a sandwich and ate it outside in my garden, which was nice

I dug some old toys out of the garage and tied them into the branches of the cherry tree in the hopes that I actually get to eat some of the cherries before the birds get to them all. There are little green bulbs! I have no idea how long it takes them to go from that stage to ripe, but I'll keep an eye on them and hopefully they continue existing in the meantime

Let's see, spent some time on the internet, and by then ash was on his way home, but once he actually got home he went into his room to lay down for a bit, so I played some video games on the switch. Once he was up and making dinner, I read some more Raising the Stones to him, and then he did his gardening and I hung out in the yard. He noticed that the sprinklers had not actually turned on, so I investigated the sprinkler control and, welp, seems the sprinklers aren't working. So that needs to get submitted to maintenance, because I have zero idea what the problem could be or how to fix it. Poking at things, resetting things, turning knobs, yielded no results so it doesn't seem like anything got turned off or anything over the winter. At a completely random guess, something chewed through one of the cables connecting the controller to the sprinkler system, or one of the yard guys messed something up while they were back there.

While messing with that I noticed the pool was low, so I set about refilling it, and in the process tried to re-attach the hose the pool guy disconnected from the faucet. This was a pain in the ass, but I got it, in the end, and even attached it to the hose storage loop, so in theory I can use that. Anyway, I forgot to set an alarm to tell me when to stop filling the pool, so it ended up extremely full. Oops.

ash and I watched youtube videos, both linguistic and shitpost, while eating tacos, and then ended the evening with some youtube-poops. ash went to bed, I went into my room, listened to some podcasts, and played PlateUp!. Not a bad day, all in all.

some ................... what

It's a genre of edited video primarily characterised by cutting up audio to make characters say stupid or bizarre things, and other effects used to achieve a specific tone. It's very dumb humor

Here are Into the Woods and Les Mis YTPs that are good examples of what they are

There's a Japanese game whose translation gets a lot of flack for being bad on the basis that the translators changed a lot of things in the process of translating -- there is certainly a lot of room for dialogue in translation practices about when and how and how much to localise when translating! Unfortunately a lot of people boil it down to 'localisation of any kind is always bad', because they're dumb

Anyway, a while back I was reading a thread defending this particular translation as good localisation that gets the intended meaning of the Japanese across in a way that people from English-speaking countries will understand, and there is a specific reply to this that I think about all the time

Which is that they speak English, but are not from one of the dominant English-speaking countries

They don't speak Japanese, so they want to play games translated into English

But they don't want the games to be localised, because their culture is closer to Japanese culture than English cultures

So they don't understand the cultural references that have been localised into English

So... they get less enjoyment out of a game, when it's been translated in a way that causes them to miss those cultural references...

Kind of like... Americans and Europeans do when games are directly translated instead of localised

🤔

The rose arrived yesterday! It's in fantastic condition and extremely eager to regrow itself, it's even trying to put out a bloom. I may cut it off to encourage it to put more energy into growing leaves back, but I don't want to if I don't need to. Plan is to put it in the ground tomorrow, along with some other yard stuff, and I'm taking it easy and conserving spoons in the meantime

What we did do today was ash did my hair and makeup and took pictures of me in the yard. We are still working out what works well for me (I am difficult to photograph, and my tones are different from his in ways that mean he has to learn how to make me up), but it was fun and we got some good pictures, that he's also going to have fun editing

Last night I saw that Graveyard Keeper was on sale, and I've been interested in it, so I got it. It is not entirely fair to say that it's Stardew Valley but with a graveyard instead of a farm, but it is fair enough that even the developers make the comparison. It is more plot driven, and as far as I know there's no dating in it (so even if it does turn out to have romanceable characters in the same way Stardew does, it's much less of a focus), but other than that,

Anyway, I've been having fun with it

I have to mash potatoes now so off I go

Rose successfully planted! Also fed the other roses, and cleared space for the morning glories but have not yet planted them. Pictures tomorrow, because I am pretty tired now and want to just sit down for a while.

ME LEGS

Spent about an hour weeding, tilling, and planting marigold seeds in the flowerbed; was going to move on to other garden plans but I decided to stop before I gave myself heat exhaustion. Letting "weeds" mostly do their own thing until they're in my way continues to pay off -- that ground was super soft and easy to plant in, once I'd pulled everything out (which also went pretty easy). Past experience of planting there last year was that it was a Pain in the Ass because the ground was so hard and dusty.

Meanwhile letting some weeds grow around the roses in the same bed is also having benefits -- the weeds are taking some off the heat off the roses, aphid-wise, and the competition has the roses growing stronger. Pretty sure they also helped enrich the soil, as well.

Things I need to do (within a few days, not necessarily today immediately) are shower, record Arcadia and paraNormal lines, and bake a cake. Dad's birthday is at the end of the week and I want to go visit him on Thursday and bring a slice of cake or two with me. Thursday is I think our projected hottest day of the week, so that'll be fun.

My immediate future however is lunch and rest and a little video games, as a treat. I am enjoying Graveyard Keeper, though there's a lot in it that is poorly explained, and it unfortunately has the worst fishing minigame I've ever played. The dev also seems weirdly defensive about it? Like shows up in threads with people complaining about it/asking for mods to make faces at them, which really turns me off. Maybe if you didn't want people complaining about the fishing minigame you shouldn't have made it such dogshit.

I discovered this by searching to see if there were any mods for it I could use, but the only mod I could find just gets rid of it entirely, which is not what I want. I like fishing minigames! I want to play this one! I just want it to not be so unfair and inaccessible!

But yeah the dev's response to people asking for changes to it is 'you can play the entire game without ever fishing' which, like, I think you should want people to engage with (and enjoy) the mechanics you put in the game? If we're not "supposed" to play it then why put it in there?

Anyway. It does have a vibe of a game made specifically for the developer, and if other people enjoy it that's cool too. But it's the game they want to play, first and foremost. I have no idea if that's actually the case, but I completely support that mentality and that vibe. And I'm gonna go play some more of it. Right after I eat.

Productive day! I have thrown laundry in the wash, cleaned the cat's litterbox, taken my trash out, planted more marigolds, taken a shower, and now I'm waiting to throw the laundry in the dryer before I record some lines. Tonight I will bake a cake and then I'll have done basically everything on my list

Still need to get the morning glories in the ground, and will either do that later this afternoon or tomorrow
