Also like - that whole 'you're going to leap out in front of my car like a deranged squirrel if I don't stop' argument always comes across as really disingenuous, honestly. Like, sure, pedestrians cross suddenly and dangerously sometimes and they shouldn't do that, but that's not something that happens in the situations being talked about. Y'all are just upset pedestrians are talking shit about cars

Steam has a bundle of "games for cat lovers" on deep sale - mostly little casual puzzle games with cat themes, and if that's not up my alley, I don't know what is - so I got that and played a little of a few of them

One of them is Purring Quest, which I've had on my list for ages now. I 100%ed it in about four hours - it's very cute, I love the animations, it has a nice variety of goals. It also has kind of clunky controls and opaque mechanics, and is a little unnecessarily tragic in the beginning. I don't remember how much it is not-on-sale but it's definitely worth a few bucks if you like platformers. And cats.

I'm avoiding life right now, and especially avoiding being alone with my own thoughts, but I do have to sleep sometimes, so.

I learned something neat!

So English has "this", for things that are nearby, and "that", for things that are further away

Japanese has "kore", for things that are near the speaker, "sore", for things that are near the listener, and "are" for things that are further away

That distinction had never occurred to me before and I think it's nifty

I did give teket a line-of-sight distinction -- they have 'things nearby that the speaker can see', 'things far away that the speaker can see', 'things nearby that the speaker can't see', and things far away that the speaker can't see', which was a system I also thought was neat when I found out about it.

Today I am feeling less 'study Japanese' and more 'work on conlang'

Oz is very consistently asking to come into the guest room/office with me, whereupon she sits in the window for a while and then lays down on the bed behind me and hangs out until I leave

She and Loki even tolerate each other enough to both hang out on the bed!

Okay, I have done some work on the formality/familiarity registers for teket lau and I'm going to call that all done for now. I do still want -- like, the actual content of speech to be affected, but I remain unsure how and I'm going to see if I can't just develop some rules for that naturally

Anyway, here's the rough guidelines
("unfamiliarity" instead of "familiarity" so that 0 on both scales will be "casual")

  • Honorifics:

    • Formality 0: Most likely dropped

    • Formality 1: Likely dropped, depending on familiarity

    • Formality 2: Likely kept, depending on familiarity

    • Formality 3: Most likely kept

    Referents:

    • Unfamiliarity 0: Secret name, taken name, given name

    • Unfamiliarity 1: Taken name, given name, common name

    • Unfamiliarity 2: Common name, pronouns, title

    • Unfamiliarity 3: Pronouns, title, impersonal honorific

    Conjugation:

    • Verbs are conjugated except by children and in situations where an inferior is speaking to a superior at formality 2+
