Long weekend has ended!

Wednesday: picked Sophie up, drove home, took a nap about it, and then we walked to the farmer's market! Our specific purpose was to grab things to make dinner with, but mostly to enjoy the vibes because it was nice and shaded by trees and dog-friendly and there was a local jazz lady doing jazz lady things. Notably we took Baby Dog in her wagon, which is the furthest I've ever taken her in it. I got it because she loves to Go Places but especially in the summertime it just hurts her too much to walk very far, so I've been working on training her to hang out in a wagon that I pull. She did really well! Still needs a bit of work, I had to give her a "stay" command a few times when she got antsy and then we did have to stop once or twice to just let her hop out and pee/sniff for a moment. But I was able to take her all the way to the farmer's market and back and she had an absolute blast, which is the important part.

Thursday: Museum of Science and Industry! There's a Pompeii exhibit there and that specifically + Roman culture in general is a huge passion of Sophie's, so she was delighted. To appease her himbo girlfriend (that's me) there were CHICKENS! BABY CHICKENS!!!! PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP!!! Then I had D&D, which Sophie listened in on while she drew on her tablet.

Friday: we had planned to go see Barbie Movie but honestly after my work week + two days of Many Things I was really tired. I had actually decided to do an after-action with Sophie requesting that next time we have a weekend together we plan slightly fewer things, or otherwise try to plan a day to be a Rest/Chill at Home day, but was gonna do Barbie Movie and whatnot anyways 'cuz I didn't want to be a buzzkill. Anyways it turned out Sophie was also very tired so we did a good communication and stayed home; she played A Little to the Left on my Switch and I flopped down to finish reading one of my library books. After we recovered some spell slots we ended up summoning the Toes to all play Jackbox together and made many immature jokes and had many snorting belly laughs.

Saturday: botanical gardens! I have never been to the Chicago Botanical Gardens, but I pass it every time I drive to Milwaukee, so I had suggested to Sophie rather than take the train back I could drive her back and we could make a pit stop at the botanical gardens. I'm glad we did, it was absolutely lovely! It was also massive, and will definitely take multiple trips to fully explore. After that I drove Sophie back to Milwaukee, which included a pit stop to get her keys from her friend who works at a cat rescue so there were KITTENS!!!

PXL_20230722_185407028.jpg

then we hung out in Sophie's apartment for a bit where I bothered her cat, and after that I drove back to tidy up the apartment and be a slug for a bit.

Today is a work day for me but I'm taking it easy, routines-wise, and am going to get groceries and finish a few chores rather than do my normal writing/exercise/etc stuff. Tomorrow I'll get back to "normal," and then after that I only work one more day before I get another weekend which will probably be spent doing as few things as possible because I can only handle so much excitement at once.

It was a wonderful long weekend, though! We both needed the girlfriends time and also a bit of a genuine vacation from life/stress, and it's nice to be able to explore things with someone you love.

It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror by Joe Vallese (editor) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Five stars

ow ow ow ow ow ow

Okay this was great but like, be prepared to take lots of psychic damage because it's a lot of queer people reflecting on being queer and the way that they relate to horror as a medium (in this case, specifically via horror movies). I appreciated that there are some "messy" stories in here -- sometimes this kind of stuff can feel a bit scrubbed clean, if that makes sense? Like in order to make it seem more inspirational or relatable or something? Anyways, I didn't get that vibe from this. There's people being hurt and causing hurt and I appreciated that, because being queer is fucking hard and it's not always a linear path of bravery and eventual acceptance. It's also diverse enough that there were stories that I related to so much I went "ouch" out loud, and stories I couldn't relate to at all, which are both good things!

Anyways, if this sounds like your jam you'll know it from the title alone I think. I recommend it, and it's a bunch of small essays so you can read it in pieces and kinda skim the ones you're not into. Some of them missed for me or felt like they struggled to be on theme, but the majority were good and interesting.

Man who on Earth asked for this Wonka prequel movie with Timothée Chalamet

Like there's plenty of movies that come out and I know I'm not the audience for it and I'm fine with that but literally who is the audience for this, I don't even know

As a follow-up thought I think one of the core reasons the concept of this movie is inherently off-putting to me is because Willy Wonka is a character who works less the more you explain him. Part of this is due to, uh, the whole cartoon slave labor thing, but I think some characters and concepts function best as a force of nature instead of as actual people.

Go with me on this journey, but to me it's kinda like Hannibal Lecter. Hannibal Rising wasn't entirely unenjoyable, if only because---

MV5BMGQ2ZjU4OWQtOTA3NS00MWU4LThjOTQtODcyMDRhMzZkYWJkXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNzU1NzE3NTg@._V1_.jpg

(RIP Gaspard Ulliel)

---but anyways, I think there are some characters who become less compelling the more you try to convince an audience they're plausible. Hannibal Lecter is absurd to think of as a real human being; he is perfect at everything, including being a sociopath. He is highly intelligent, well-educated, well-traveled, and (before being outed as a serial killer), beloved by high society. When he does suffer consequences, it's not really consequences, because once he's ready to escape his situation he absolutely does so. He is feared and never fully bested. Hannibal Rising was awkward, at best, because it tried to make any of that realistic, and honestly? You just can't. He's not a character that's grounded in reality, he's a force of nature. You're either into that or you aren't, but trying to say his aristocratic family was murdered and cannibalized and then he had an intense relationship with his aunt while going on a revenge tour to kill and eat the people responsible for aforementioned murder, like,,,,

sir,,,,

I had the same issues with the character of Riddick from Pitch Black; once Chronicles of Riddick expanded the lore and his eyesight was revealed to be a racial trait Furyans have or whatever, instead of the lines he gave in Pitch Black about getting an "optic shine job" which sounded cool and plausible in-universe, it stopped being as interesting. Pitch Black narrowed its focus into surviving this fucked-up planet with a character who was feared as a monstrous killer, but once the story was like "hey actually he's genetically a bad-ass that can see in the dark and survived a genocide and now he has to fight uhhhhh magic undead space wizards" then I tuned out. Part of that is preference, sure, since I think some people did enjoy the hard left into space fantasy that Chronicles of Riddick took, but I think a lot of it is trying to "well, actually" a force of nature into being just another special boy.

tl;dr Willy Wonka is in the same boat, imho, where the more you explain his absurd success, his absurd motivations, his absurd giant wacky factory full of magical orange people who sing and dance, it just loses the thread. He was meant to be mysterious, and for that to spark our imaginations and to make him seem intimidating and wondrous.

anyways, movie looks dumb and bad, thank you for coming to my TED Talk

Checked my Goodreads stats on a whim and I can definitely say I've already succeeded at my goal this year to read more!

image.png

I purposefully did not give myself a specific "read X books" goal and just focused broadly on setting aside more time to read, especially in lieu of refreshing feeds on my phone, and it's been a positive for me.

also DAMN the library is crunk, I finally got the hang of using the app to request books and now have a good rotation going of picking up my new holds whenever I return a book

Your Willy Wonka thoughts are on point, some things (and characters) just become boring when you explain them and ground them in reality

It's really weird that they've taken the one part of the Tim Burton Willy Wonka that everyone hated and decided to make an entire movie out of it

Friday! Shmoopin' along!

Tomorrow is supposed to be thunderstorms and gross heat all day so I tried to set Weekend Erika up for success; I did most of my tidying and also nabbed groceries and returned my library books already. I've started a Stardew Valley kick so I'll probably play some of that tomorrow and some bungame, and generally chill and recover the rest of my spell slots after the busy weekend.

Weekend!

Yesterday I went on a nice long run but mostly rested, which was delightful! I played a bunch of Stardew Valley and then ended up hopping into Valheim with several of the Toes and had a great time. It's super nice to play a teamwork/survival game with friends; Sam and I, as the aggression/short attention span twins, got sent on a scouting mission to find dungeons, then while Sam marked a bunch on the map I made our forward operating base look pretty (and also added some defenses). Meanwhile Shane and Masque stayed at the home base to build up our bronze and coal supplies and all of this sounds very lame but it was just really relaxing and nice to work together with good friends to explore a world.

Also, we purposefully put our beds all side-by-side so when we slept for the night it was a giant sleepover. I love my friends!

Today I did my one errand and tidied up on the apartment, so I'm set to frankly continue relaxing and recovering my spell slots. I have a vague feeling I should be doing something more "productive" but, eh, unless my brain can tell me what the productive thing actually is, it can fuck off. I did just pay bills and am currently doing meal prep, so I'm not ignoring anything that needs to be done. Therefore, pbbbbbtttttt fart noises at brain
