One of Those Days. The winter melancholy and ennui have descended

Woke up at about 8 -- naturally, not due to cat -- and spent some time listening to podcasts, reading Babel (new book I've borrowed from the library), and skimming some linguistics textbooks, but after a few hours I was too tired to absorb anything so decided that I would go back to sleep. After all, I thought, I didn't have anything scheduled for today

Unfortunately there was in fact an Arcadia recording scheduled for today, that I woke up 45 minutes late to. Rather than rescheduling, it's been set as a 'record your parts individually and we'll edit them together in post', which I am nervous about -- everyone else is very confident about we the actors' ability to predict how each others' lines will be read since we have been recording together for over three years now, but it actually happens that that actor very often surprises me with their line reads. But I'm sure it'll be fine -- I'll do my best, and if it sounds weird then ash will tell me and I'll redo things.

Disappointed in myself for fucking that up -- I have been keeping track of that session and trying to keep it in mind, but confused myself both by spending all day yesterday feeling like it was Wednesday (and therefore the day the session was scheduled on already happened), and it happens that there used to be a Breathing Space session scheduled for today as well, but got cancelled, and somehow figuring that out crossed wires in my head (because I was stressed about the session not actually being cancelled, so kept reminding myself that if it were a real session that ash would have reminded for it, and he hadn't, and ergo I didn't have to worry about it). And I somehow missed ash's reminder for the arcadia.

Just a mess from several angles.

Oh, on top of all of that, actually recording has been a mess -- I talked about this before, but in short the desktop hasn't been available for recordings due to backup nonsense, my laptop can't be used for recordings because discord won't accept input through my OS, ash loaned me a computer that now can't be used for recordings because after setting it up it stopped recognising either my microphone or my headphones, and now the laptop Erik loaned me has had the same issue of getting set up, working fine, and then no longer recognising my microphone or my headphones. I do not know what is going on but it sucks quite a lot! I have now set up my steamdeck for recording and if when I turn it on to record later tonight it has stopped recognising my microphone I will scream. I fortunately don't have to have headphones for a solo recording, so I don't need to worry about those not working for a while.

In, uh, four days, per sesh.

Anyway, aside from all that, today has been. Blah. I've just been sitting here all day not doing anything, which is a pity because I would have liked to have done things, and would have liked to have spent time with ash if he were up for it. It was supposed to rain today, but didn't, but feels like a rainy sort of day despite.

I don't remember if I mentioned, but I bought a little firepit recently (just a metal bowl with legs, nothing fancy) and last night ash and I sat around it for a little bit while we burned some paper trash and some firewood. I was supposed to clean it up today while the sun was out but I didn't manage that, and now it's supposed to rain in a few hours and again tomorrow afternoon, so I either need to do something about that or the wood's going to get all wet.

Scratch that, looked outside and it is in fact raining presently. Woops! I guess that resolves that, though. Still, I should at least move the screen so it doesn't get all rusted.

One of our traditions for the holiday season, carried over from my family, is setting up a winter village on the dining table, and we also like to go out and buy something to add to it every year. We've previously gone to Michaels for that, but their miniature buildings are very expensive and also not quite the right scale, so this year we decided to try going to a thrift store. I also have a not-quite-a-tradition because before now I have never successfully done it, but I like to try to find a tacky or ugly sweater every year for the season -- and this year I managed! I have a decently thick knit sweater with a Santa riding a tyrannosaurus patched onto it. The tyrannosaurus has jingle bells around its neck. I'm very pleased with the find, and also very disappointed with fast fashion, because most of the pickings were very thin and cheaply made. It's disheartening to think that we're running out of solidly made clothes because they stopped making them twenty years ago

Anyway, we did find an adorable little house that also happens to be a broken music box, and a carousel made out of sheet metal that is also a broken music box. This weekend, if we have energy, we'll start decorating! And I imagine Cael will promptly ruin everything -- he is absolutely the kind of cat to try climbing the christmas tree, and also there will be no keeping him off the table. We'll have to adjust what we can, and just deal with some things probably getting broken otherwise.

Alright, I've moved it all under the patio cover, which does not completely stop rain but does stop most of it

Oz has been doing so good with her food! She's been eating all of it, and not too long after I put it out, and sometimes she's still hungry so I give her half a scoop as a snack and she eats all of that and still eats all of her dinner!

I've also been able to get her to play a bit -- we've been putting ash's animals in the office or his bedroom with the door closed at night, so until I go to bed, Cael and Oz have the house to themselves, and before I go to bed I also put Cael away in my bathroom for a bit to get him to calm down enough to let everyone sleep, and during that I'll go out with Oz and let her explore the house as the only animal out there, and play with her with a couple of toys including one that is Only Hers and no one else has played with or touched (except for me). She's doing so good! Still nervous and anxious but I'm so proud of her.

I'm still worried about how bony parts of her are, and hopefully with all this she starts putting some weight back on (and muscle). And maybe she'll develop some confidence, too.

Set oven to 450F

Gather:
1 egg
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup milk
A generous pinch of salt

Whisk together in a small bowl until smooth

If you're feeling saucy, throw some maple syrup in there (real or fake, who cares)

Get out a muffin pan or reasonable alternative, put 1/2 tsp solid fat (save up your bacon grease for this) or a dollop of oil into three of the wells

Wait for the oven to finish preheating

Put the pan on a baking tray and put both in the oven for five minutes, on the lowest rack. Make sure there's room above it for the puds to pop over (rise). Whisk the batter again while you wait. When the fat/oil is done getting hot, divide the batter evenly between the three wells

Let bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden and crispy. Eat hot with a little jam or gravy.

I have done vegetable oil and I've done real meat drippings, and I prefer the drippings for the ease and lack of food waste, but I didn't taste any particular difference between the finished products

I do not have a good recommendation for amount of syrup because I'm still experimenting with it

Calling grease and fat 'food waste' is a little silly but like, I mean that I'm not using up the vegetable oil or whatever, as opposed to not throwing away perfectly good food, you feel me
