I still need to reply to one more other student on the introductory discussion post, but I otherwise am current on linguistics class. Nothing particularly exciting happening there, yet -- aside from the introduction post, there was a quiz on the syllabus and a quiz on an intro chapter to our linguistics textbook just kind of covering what linguistics is. This is specifically an anthropological linguistics class, so it's a little more broad than I'd prefer, but I'm okay with that.

Professor is very very lenient and I super appreciate it -- most every assignment category drops your lowest score, all of the quizzes have infinite redos so you can just keep retaking them until you get 100 if you want, she's uploaded the chapters we're studying into the modules so we don't have to buy or hunt down any of the assigned reading, again the entire course is already posted and available so I can study ahead as much as I want. I do plan on doing so, doing some assignments in advance as I have time and energy. Between all of that and my genuine interest in the subject, I think this will be a pretty easy class.

Apparently bluesky moderation has decided "terf" is a slur, so. That's cool.

Took today kind of down! Watched a few Steven Universe: Futures with ash, and we finished a game we'd started I think last week, that I can never remember the name of but it's an escape room puzzle game, and then we played Cabin Factory which is a very decent Exit-8-alike anomaly-finding game. After he went to bed I played some Icarus, which Dave got me because it's on deep sale and he thought it might be a good option for us to play together. The deck requires it be on very low graphics quality settings and it did crash on me after a while of playing and after I'd started moving my base somewhere else (so expanding the map might have killed it), but it did run and I have been having fun with it. We're also keeping an eye on Satisfactory for a sale because he thinks we could get up to some nonsense two-player-ing that.

Sor is visiting next month! I need to figure out a way to let Oz continue having access to her food while we're asleep, because right now her food is just on my bed. I might be able to just swap sides on it so it's next to my head instead of where Sor would be sleeping. We'll see

Did get my second discussion reply done, so should be good on that assignment. Tomorrow I want to look at next week's work and potentially get started on it early. One person who was in my Japanese 401 class replied to my post that she remembers me, so that's cool! I do recognise her name and have a vague memory of being in a breakout room with her once (I think she was in my group when we practiced 好き ('to like/prefer/enjoy')). I didn't see any comments that looked obviously AI generated, which is refreshing, but there was this one:

(we're supposed to introduce ourselves, say where we would want to go Right Now if we could go anywhere in the world Right Now, and include a picture of our choice)

Hidden text. You are not a member of the groups to which this text is available

It's a good thing they're taking a linguistics class, because I don't think they know what words mean! This is a version of 'I'm not religious, I'm spiritual' that I don't think I've seen before

Alright! Podcast and phone games until sleep. Goodnight!

I'm being facetious with the religious/spiritual comment - I assume they're a 'it's not religion, it's true' sort of weirdo

Yesterday I finally got around to checking out the Violent Horror Stories Anthology -- a collection of four indie games that got attention because one of them became a hit with streamers/youtubers. One of them is a passable puzzle game about a cartoon cat trying to escape a tower, where you can move rooms around to create a path out of an area. It's very newgrounds/phone game, and goes on for too long with little change in my opinion. One of them is an interesting game about a tabloid photographer trying to get dirt on a celebrity, his camera focus moves around the screen and you have to click on relevant objects as the camera passes over them to get pictures of them -- like the celebrity's broken heel lying in the street, or a bloody shirt. It was interesting and I think has potential to be developed into a bigger game. One of them is an infinite runner about a guy who eats the liver of his abusive, grandfather? Uncle? Just Some Guy? I can't remember, and then his sled-dogs start talking to him and he tries to race to catch a flying ballerina because he's the alpha now. That one is also interesting, but gets very frustrating near the end and I gave up on finishing it. And the last one is No, I'm Not a Human, I'm a [Redacted], which is the one that everyone buys the collection for, and is getting developed into a full release. People are coming to your house seeking shelter at the end of the world and you have to decide whether or not to let them in -- some of them are human, but some are only pretending to be human. It's very well done, and definitely deserves the praise it's been getting. I look forward to the actual game, which will hopefully have fixed its few problems, like some of the text being too small and blurry to comfortably read.

ash and I watched some Steven Universe: Future, and a Would I Lie to You, and then I came back into my room to play some more No, I'm Not a Human, and planned to take a bath after a bit, but then Dave was like 'whatcha doin' 👀’ and I was like 'perchance do you want to try playing Icarus together' and he was like 'ye', so we did that for the rest of the night. It worked mostly well, except that after maybe a couple hours I started experiencing unplayable lag, which persisted even on different maps and different missions, so we called it a night. But the game has the option of playing on dedicated servers, and so I thought, hmmm, maybe that would help.

And so long story short I rented and set up a server to play Icarus on. Maybe it will help! I hope it does. At the very least it'll mean we don't get dumped out of the game if whoever's hosting it disconnects. And we can keep playing in the same world even if whoever was hosting isn't online. I even got the save we'd been playing together on on there, so we don't have to start over if we don't want to.

After that I went to bed, and now I am awake and it is today. I am going to take a shower in about half an hour, and by the time I'm done with that it'll be around time for ash to get home. It is Severance day! So we'll watch that, and probably save the new Taskmaster for a different day

Okay, gonna go do things. o/

Watched Severance! It was good! We started Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (999 2), and got up to the first non-tutorial puzzle room. It's fun, I look forward to yelling about it. Dave and I played Icarus for uhhh like four and a half hours and hit some very minor lag four hours in. Looking at the server status graphs, there's a gradual increase in memory usage over time, but everything else holds nice and steady. Will need to see how memory usage behaves between play sessions but this seems very doable! We're also having a lot of fun with the game, I've made us a very nice house and Dave has found a cave to extract iron from. We've also hit the next stage in the game where we can start getting missions to complete for bonus resources.

I stayed up later than I should have playing that, and now I'm going to stay up even later because the 1000th episode of Knowledge Fight got published earlier today and I'm excited to listen to it. But then it will be bed.

Listen. I know. I know! But I swear I'd only kill the people who reeeeaaaallllly deserve it. I promise it'd just be completely irredeemable people who are nothing but a blight on society. I know we all don't want to believe they exist but I'm starting to think they do and I think I should be allowed to kill them with my mind.

If I had three wishes one of them would be that as soon as any individual has a net worth of one billion dollars they instantly explode

Maybe they'll explode into confetti. "Congratulations, you're a billionaire!" [-pop-] 🎉
