I learned yesterday (through someone else's TIL) that there are two different kinds of stereograms ('magic eye' pictures) designed for one of two different methods for viewing them: the 'crossed eye' method and the 'wall-eyed' method. I did not know that there were other methods and have been crossing my eyes this entire time, which means that I am seeing most stereograms inside out! I thought everyone saw the image as kind of a hole in the picture but apparently you're supposed to see them pop out at you! (Most magic eyes are designed for the wall-eyed technique, which explains the advice to "try to look behind the picture" advice people give to see them)
Anyway since then I have been trying to see one 'correctly' and finally did just a bit ago. That's a much clearer result when you're doing it the way it expects you to! Now I know how people were always able to tell what the image was supposed to be, using the cross-eye method I can see the general shape of it but can usually only identify it after being told what it is, unless it's very obvious. But you can see the details (such as there are) much better when it's popping out at you than when it's in a hole.
This is cool! But still hard, I'm going to keep practicing until it's as easy as crossing my eyes to see them
A bunch of them have like little diorama elements that I can't see when I'm doing it wrong, like there's different levels to the background and there's little setpieces around what the image "is"
Inside-out: "Uhhh, it's like, a cookie-cutter angel, maybe?"
Rightside-out: "Oh it's a fairy in a short dress, with short hair, sitting casually on some kind of ring or hoop, and reading a book"
Wild!
I did find one clearly designed for cross-eyed viewing and it's as clear and easy to see as the wall-eyed ones when viewed correctly, and as hard to distinguish when viewed wall-eyed, so it's not that one method is for some reason better than the other, it's just that people mostly make them for the one method over the other
OH MY GOD
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS AMV FOR AT LEAST TEN YEARS
I thought youtube scrubbed it!! Turns out I'd put it on my tumblr at some point?? Oh my god
Of course now if I search 'silent hill da vinci's notebook' it comes right up but I swear it wasn't. Maybe the artist had it unlisted and recently made it public again? Or this is a testament to how bad search engines have been getting and for how long they've been doing that
ash may or may not remember I tried really hard to show this to him when we were playing the Silent Hill games, and Could Not find it
Gonna make one of my concultures call the basement the first floor, so the ground floor is the second or third floor
Welp, didn't get my homework done in time, but I did get what I was able to get done turned in, so that's something. A little over half done, I think? Just straight up did not give myself enough time to work on it -- as I've mentioned, I'm struggling a lot with motivation this semester.
ash and I went to Daiso today -- he had some stuff he wanted to pick up but I was just looking around. He did get me a pineapple cider that was delicious, do not ask me what makes it a cider because I do not know, it does not appear to have any fruit juice in it.
I did some work on the conlang relay, I tentatively think this will be easier to turn into English than what I got during the previous relay. When I hung out with ash during dinner, I felt like watching someone make fun of God's Not Dead, so we watched an old Big Joel video on it. Then we watched some conlang videos and then he went to bed
Yesterday, our laundry room and kitchen flooded again. It was thought it was the washing machine breaking but it turns out to probably be our pipes getting clogged again. We've put in a maintenance request but we're not super duper optimistic about them getting back to us, or getting maintenance scheduled, before Thanksgiving. This will be annoying, because Thanksgiving is a dirty-dish-creating holiday and we can't use our dishwasher or sink. To say nothing of the already dirty dishes that need taking care of
It's getting late, so I should wrap up and get ready for bed
