TIL that the way crane games are rigged is the spring controlling the claw's grip will only engage once in every set number of times (example was 1 in 50), so every other time the claw will close but not grip

Also apparently crane game ~connoisseurs~ refer to this as the claw getting stronger as you play

Feeling not great today, nauseated and throat continues to bother me, tired and some muscle weakness. Plan is to do laundry today, I want to wash and change all the bedding, or as much as I'm able to. Other than that, rest

I'm increasing how much Cael is getting fed again, I'm pretty sure he's still not getting enough. So up from two scoops a day to three, adding a meal time in at about 5

Hot take: forcing people to do image alt text results in a lot of low-quality alt text

Lukewarm take: I should be able to label images in metadata, I should be able to search images in my pictures folder by metadata labels, this should be standardised across systems, and screen readers should be able to find image descriptions in that metadata, not alt text. Then users are incentivised to put clear, concise image descriptions in their own pictures because it benefits them, and as a bonus it benefits the rest of the internet at the same time

Over and over again we see problems with the current alt text system that people try to band-aid over by changing how people use the system, when the system is just bad to begin with and should be changed at a higher level

This is wishful thinking, of course, it would take an enormous amount of momentum to replace what people are already doing

Tired! Gonna be an early bed night. Have Arcadia recording tomorrow, a couple bits ranging from urgent (for an episode releasing on Friday) to less urgent (for an episode releasing in three weeks). There's Oz's ultrasound on Friday, also, then on Saturday ash and I are going to go to a reptile expo, and on Sunday we have vaccine appointments. So it's a full week, even if I weren't sick

Did do a load of laundry but didn't change bedding, will do that maybe tomorrow or Thursday. I did get the electric blanket washed -- ash suggested just gently washing it in the shower while I was in it, so I tired that and it no longer smells like pee and is still working, so a success

Cael figured out how to jump over the gate, by climbing the chicken wire, so I've put some double-sided tape on it to discourage him. He has poked at it a little, but hasn't tried climbing it again yet, we'll see if it works. He was mostly a good boy today, but did pounce Oz a couple of times. She is doing better with him, aside from the pouncings setting progress back.

I'm back to learning Japanese, a little; not super focused on it at the moment but I've done a bit. Duolingo's decision to get rid of the archived discussions entirely really killed my motivation, and I might drop duolingo entirely, but I haven't decided yet. I did let my 97 day streak die. Might look at lingodeer again, or I wonder if bunpro has an app

Been playing a lot of viscera cleanup detail again, it's a nice one to listen to things with, and I've been putting on some 'life in Japan' videos to zone out to while I do that, just because it's what youtube recommends once you've watched enough Japanese grammar videos

And I'm gonna go do more of that until it's time to feed the cats.

Hey I just heard some Japanese in the wild and understood it! (ちょっと たすけて おねがいします, "a little help, please")

Awake at six-something, it's now after 8 and I still can't fall back asleep. It's going to be a rough day

@tailsteak Art programs should really have an 'undo x actions and redo them on a new layer' option by now

The cool thing about this one is that I haven't been taught the phrase 'I need a little help, please' -- or even 'help, please' or any other iteration here. I've just been taught that 'chotto' means 'a little bit'*, that tesukete means 'help' and 'onegaishimasu' means 'please', and was able to put them together on the fly and understand their combined meaning!

*Chotto is another fun one because I wasn't actually taught its meaning as 'a little bit' per se, but as its use as a 'soft no' -- to turn something down you can say "Ah, that's a little bit..." and let it hang. "Can you come over at 8 o'clock?" "Ah, 8 is a little bit... [difficult]" ("あ、 はちじはちょっと。。。")

In kitten training, I'm leaving the door open so he gets exposed to the other animals in the house (closing it if things start getting heated); he's getting some roaming time outside of my room; he's getting brief unsupervised time in my room; he's getting exposed to food he's not allowed to have and being taught 'no' and to mind his manners; and I'm teaching him his name and to come when I call him

As for the animals, Loki seems okay with him, Ivy is mostly doing fine except when she gets too excited, Sekhmet is a butt, and Mochi has only come out for brief peeks to see what's up. I don't think Echo has seen the new boy at all yet. This weekend we'll work on Ivy time without a gate between them

And for food, I think three scoops are still not enough for him (suggesting he is indeed younger than thought, by the charts) so I think I'll start giving him two scoops for his dinner, see how that goes

Oh, he also lost a baby tooth today, so maybe older than predicted. Who knows!
