Mechanist progression! I actually really love this questline, I hadn't intended on leveling the class at all but I was drawn in by these dumb steampunk nerds and their himbo leader.

Been having a great time getting everything to 60! Something I've enjoyed a lot about FF14 is, for me at least, I don't feel like there's any built-in pressure to power level or grind anything out. I've played a lot of other games that want you to reach end-game content as quickly as possible, but I don't feel like I'm hugely missing out by not being at max power level. So I'm having a good time exploring the post-Heavensward content at my own pace, and once I get everyone to 60 and am working on gearing up a little bit I'll start progressing MSQ forward again.

shocking no one, Fisher is currently my highest leveled class 😂

Appropriately, the level 50-60 Bard job questline was one of the gayest things I've ever seen

Important notes:

1) a key part of the plot was Guydelot reading Sanson's journal (or was it the other way around?) and there is no possible way Sanson did not draw hearts in the margins with their names in it
2) Guydelot storms off partway through because he and Sanson have A Big Fight but then he spends the rest of the questline following to make sure Sanson is safe and THEN dramatically appears to play his harp for him
3) I mean just look at that "oh my god you DO care" face after Sanson is surprised and happy to see him
4) I will fight anyone who tries to tell me an elf with teal-frosted tips is a heterosexual
5) Guydelot's title is Guydelot the Spent and Sanson's is Sanson the Stiff, I just --

Also I have red mage questline screenshots to post but I'll do that tomorrow on my day off because predictably I took eight thousand of them I need to sort through

By "tomorrow" I apparently meant three days later but here we go!

First of all, I know it's just a Miqo'te thing, but the way he stands is very funny to me like look at my mans his legs are nine feet apart

2022-09-30_17-55-11-951_Off.png

Okay so!

In general the set-up for the red mage questline has been fun. Big swashbuckling energy, for sure. X'rhun Tia takes you in as a student, you find out that he's the last red mage after their order was betrayed by a dude named Lambard, and then something something OTP go smooch. Oh, and you adopt a daughter somewhere in there and train her as a red mage too. (I am only slightly exaggerating to make that more gay.)

Anyway the level 60 quest is where X'rhun gets to confront Lambard!

2022-09-30_17-56-04-517_Off.png

Turns out Lambard turned the practice of red magic into a psuedo-vampirism? Like instead of balancing white and black magic, he's something something drawing on other people's energy I forget the exact details but it amounted to energy vampirism. Bad guy! Doing bad things!

2022-09-30_17-56-24-019_Off.png

So X'rhun duels him! It's actually pretty dope, they do the sort of anime swoosh at each other and end up on opposite sides thing, and Lambard, injured, admits X'rhun is a better duelist.

2022-09-30_17-57-05-281_Off.png

Look at my bun son's boyfriend 😊😊😊

2022-09-30_17-58-27-402_Off.png

But, plot twist! Lambard only needed to get a scratch on X'rhun in order to do the energy vampirism thing, and he was able to do so, so he tries to kill him! It's pretty dramatic and X'rhun coughs up blood and tells you to leave and you're like NO D:< and you and your adopted daughter both fight Lambard and defeat him.

2022-09-30_18-11-00-044_Off.png

X'rhun gets his final say-so in and Lambard (apparently) dies. Afterward you regroup and X'rhun seems delighted you were ready to defend and/or avenge him, which I found genuinely very endearing. He seems like a character who has been lonely but not in the traditional presentation? He's not a moody teenager (the wiki says he's in his forties, and I think Miqo'te have approximately human-adjacent lifespans), but pretty literally all of his friends died and he's been wandering solo ever since. He's gregarious and friendly, which is what I meant by not the traditional presentation (vs. the sort of anime teen thing of NO TALK ME I TRAUMAS), and doesn't even try very hard to push people away, he's just not had anyone to be close to.

He's a cool character, I like him!
