Yesterday was extremely productive!

So much so that after Fetiantime I crashed and ended up just doing some ESO event dailies and going to bed super early. I struggled to actually fall asleep but ended up taking a melatonin and watching some of a Thalasso hobbyer video, which did the trick and kept me asleep til 6ish. I have since puttered about, walked to get a coffee, and am now sitting with said coffee to play some Animal Crossing and fully wake up.

speaking of Fetiantime!

He showed me Paradise Killer, which I ended up intrigued by, and it did make me think about my relationship with Weird Art (tm). Historically I tend to not like it when things are weird for the sake of weird, or when art leans hard into abstract. Surrealism, for instance, usually misses for me -- I don't like David Lynch's body of work, although it seems like he was a cool enough guy, and once a piece of media becomes more about metaphor and symbolism than literal action I tend to fade out.

I do think as I've gotten older my opinions of media have relaxed a lot, and I tend to just appreciate when someone has created something, even if (and sometimes especially if!) it's Not For Me. As a white person, a lot of media is automatically For Me; as a queer person, that's more complicated, but man, make your thing!!! If I hate it, that's ok, I'll go perceive other things elsewhere and, unless you have caused or perpetuated what I perceive as some kind of harm, wish you well.

("harm" meaning fairly specific circumstances, such as Rowling's offenses outside of her written text -- not "harm" as in "you wrote something I personally find icky")

I'm burnt out on a lot of media, and was talking recently with Greggo about how I'm just not super excited for video games at the moment. I'm still playing them, but there's no big releases I'm waiting for, and the Game Awards was (as it always is, frankly) the same four games over and over again. So yeah, man, in a world where a handful of corporations increasingly own all of the things that churn out movies and television and books, make something fuckin' weird. Be as unpalatable as you wanna be, and if someone says you're pretentious or up your own ass or trying too hard, even if it's true, at least you made something.

I'm not sure what my Weirdness Threshold is these days, relatedly, although Kojima is still too much for me, but mostly because it's just all sexual assault all the way down

(my spicy take btw is that Death Stranding isn't really that weird; the Metal Gear games kinda vary and are mostly convoluted vs actually weird but I genuinely dislike them, despite the series obviously speaking to a lot of people as a powerful piece of art)

If the answer to "is it artsy or is it rape" leans to the latter, I'm out

You may ask, "Erika what do you consider 'actually weird'" and that answer is, it depends on my mood that particular day, hope that helps

Been watching some youtubes of The Nutcracker Suite in the background and

1) do you think the Nutcracker Prince and the Rat King ever explored each other's bodies
2) when did we, as a society, stop having fancy parties where people dance with each other

2) I mean, that depends heavily on your hobbies...

(to wit, there were like 40 dancers at the holiday party I called last week. My class usually only gets 6-8, but that's honestly actually enough to do some good dancing anyways!)

true!! I am not sure what calling a party means so that's already proof I'm outside the circles where dancing is common at parties 😂

also I realized I forgot to answer your question re: my art, probably because I got distracted being snotty about my ex, but it is all digital! I download (usually via purchasing on etsy from artists who make them) brushes that look like gold leaf and am trying to find more that look like paper or wrapping paper. I do like things to be highly textured, and have an easier time approaching digital art with real-life-art medium "techniques," if I can be said to be using any technique at all
