Re: Promiseland
Talk to your pets!! Because they do actually!!
Oz knows "I have to get up, baby" and she knows "I'll be right back" means I'll be right back! How many dogs out there ask to go for a walk and understand when you say "We can do that in a few minutes", so they stop bothering you until some time has passed and then come back because you forgot? That last one is probably a tone thing but Oz definitely has picked up on some word or another in what I say as meaning 'I'm about to move and leave' or 'I'm leaving but not for long'. Animals pick up on all kinds of words if you use them consistently!

Re: Promiseland
And they definitely have some understanding of 'not right now, but later' -- which is wild! Animals DO understand time and the future, even if their understanding and perception of it is different from ours!

Relevant book recommendation: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/119723.The_Other_End_of_the_Leash
Goes over a lot of interesting information about what we know about dogs' understanding of numbers (understanding "more" and "less" is math!!! they know math!!!) and of language, really reframed how I saw communicating with my dogs for the better

Re: Promiseland
Genuinely believe 99% of pet behavioral problems can be completely solved by just spending more time actively engaging (playing!) with the animal
This is also probably true for children. Maybe even adults? Stop being an asshole and go play tag with your friends about it

Re: Promiseland
My favorite phrase Baby Dog knows is when I say "is that your toy" because she knows that means I'm about to play with her/tease her and go "because that looks like mama's toy" but before I get to the second part she's already jazzed and grabs her toy and shakes it

Re: Promiseland
So I've been cross-referencing some of what I'm studying/practising in Japanese with google translate, and it has started doing things that make me Very Suspicious google translate is now just their LLM under the hood, and translating what it thinks you meant to say instead of what you actually said (hopefully usually the same thing! But that it isn't necessarily is Important!!)
This, for example:
Note the parenthetical, which is how the kanji is written in hiragana, to remind myself of the pronunciation. You would think the translation would therefore be "My major is intercultural studies (intercultural studies)"
Anyway, if you use google translate for anything, be wary of that. Google translate has of course always been prone to mistakes of some kind or another, but the mistakes LLMs make can be impossible to spot. Hopefully it doesn't also start refusing to perform tasks that google deems problematique, though so far I haven't been able to break through its training, if I am indeed correct in what's happening and there is training to break through.

Mostly got these without review, a couple that I don't remember ever learning in class and need to figure out -- I don't remember ever learning でかける, and I apparently really need to review particles in particular (heh).
I really appreciate the professor putting up this 'what to expect/have ready for the first day' list!
I have been back on reviewing the textbook and am on track to getting re-caught up on that by Tuesday
