Oof, should not have played video games for as long as I did, I have developed a very, very nasty migraine. But it was fun and Dave and I accomplished a lot.

Class was eh again. Teacher continues to make A Thing out of it when you forget/don't know something she expects you to know, which is bad in and of itself but also she does it for like, five minutes a go, which. She's not, like, angry about it or anything, just. Makes it A Thing.

We went over homework a bit -- a lot of people apparently forgot to include この in their translations for "this" -- eg when asked to translate "please use this towel" they put "タオルを使ってください" instead of "このタオルを使ってください", or: "please use a towel" or "please use the towel" instead of "please use this towel". So that got corrected, and then we drilled te forms a bit, and then we went into two new uses for te forms: asking/giving permission, and saying something is forbidden.

I really, really need to cram vocabulary and get it all into my head better.

After all that we did kanji for sensei, left, right, and exit, and I think that's it? These are all kanji I've already studied on my own so I'm not, like, committing which ones we're doing to memory.

When I showed up to class she was still teaching her previous class, again, though this time I wasn't early, she was just late letting them go. She also said she broke her leg some time after the previous class and is on painkillers, so hopefully that heals fast for her!

After class I hung out with ash and put his keyboard together for him while we watched the Jenny Nicholson video on the Star Wars Hotel. I had thought the case he got for it would like, snap on over the body of the keyboard but that is not the case (heh), so after having it pretty much entirely put together we have discovered that it now needs to be taken apart and put back together in the case. This is not as arduous as it sounds because the hard part is done and doesn't need to be undone -- the stabilizers are lubed and installed, the switches just need to be pulled off and put back on on the case. Unfortunately we also discovered that the case doesn't actually fit the keyboard! We're not sure why, best guess is it's for an older model of the keyboard? This is annoying, but ash is going to try filing down the bits that are causing problems and we'll see if we can get it installed in that case anyway. It also won't allow us to include the tenting layer, but ash says he's going to make legs for the case instead so that's not a huge loss.

After that, and half the Jenny Nicholson video, was Stardew Valley with Dave, which went for four hours and some change. I have completely befriended the dwarf, we've made a lot of progress with the island, we're onto year three on the farm. A bunch has happened. Looking forward to next week because I have a bunch of breakables in my inventory to take to Clint.

Anyway! Going to eat dinner and watch some stuff until bed. Tomorrow I have homework to do, and I want to get my floor cleared for dresser movement.

Another day of class done. I had a brainfart and got ready to start at 4, which meant I had half an hour to sit around waiting for it to actually start, but that turned out to be good because it meant I had some time to eat lunch and get a little more studying in.

We practiced kara as 'because' and then practiced mashouka as 'shall I [verb] for you?'. And then she put us in breakout rooms "for five minutes" to read the practice dialogue for the chapter, together, and then like twenty minutes later she still hadn't summoned us back to class and it turned out we were supposed to just, leave the breakout rooms on our own. I had a good partner, though, we went through all three dialogues twice and then just chatted for a while, it was pleasant even if it meant we missed part of class.

There's a guy in the class who today was kind of disruptive, and at one point there was talk in the chat that he's not actually a student and was just, there? And when class ended the teacher pulled him aside to talk to him so I wonder if he's going to be there again next week. Weird, though!

I did do some more work getting stuff added to the anki deck but I've decided again that I don't want to do that, and am trying alternatives. I'm back to doing bunpro and jpdb lessons, and I also found a couple of anki decks other people made that miiiiiight work for me? Trying them, at any rate. I do need to find study methods that I can do for more recent stuff while those methods catch up with the class, but I will worry about that, like, tomorrow. There is definitely homework due tomorrow that I'll need to take a look at, but right now I am doing Nothing.

Nothing, and waiting for food to be delivered.

There are certain elements of this teacher's class that I do like more than I did the other teacher's, but overall I like the other teacher better, I've decided. Thankfully the next level class is taught by her.

One nice thing though! Unless she's changed it on me since I looked last night, she gave me full marks on my homework even though I made some minor mistakes!

I believe he's attended all the previous classes but has been pretty quiet until now, but today was saying... a lot of stuff in the chat? That everyone ignored. Occasional commentary on what the professor was saying but mostly japanese that was incomprehensible to me but he implied was more casual ways of saying the things she was asking us to say. Near the end of class he turned his webcam on and then his microphone, which he left on for the rest of class -- spent that time fidgeting and moving around a lot, looked honestly like he was listening to and headbobbing along with music, but if he was he was also listening to the teacher. As said at one point in the chat someone goes 'who are you' and someone else said 'he doesn't even go here', he didn't respond to either. Also near the end of class he started laughing a lot, again with his mic unmuted the whole time

Anyway really seemed like he was on drugs or something! Again curious what the teacher had to say to him and if he'll be present next week

Have a vocabulary quiz and three more workbook pages to do by midnight tomorrow, I think one of them is a kanji practice page

So I've been cross-referencing some of what I'm studying/practising in Japanese with google translate, and it has started doing things that make me Very Suspicious google translate is now just their LLM under the hood, and translating what it thinks you meant to say instead of what you actually said (hopefully usually the same thing! But that it isn't necessarily is Important!!)

This, for example:

Note the parenthetical, which is how the kanji is written in hiragana, to remind myself of the pronunciation. You would think the translation would therefore be "My major is intercultural studies (intercultural studies)"

Anyway, if you use google translate for anything, be wary of that. Google translate has of course always been prone to mistakes of some kind or another, but the mistakes LLMs make can be impossible to spot. Hopefully it doesn't also start refusing to perform tasks that google deems problematique, though so far I haven't been able to break through its training, if I am indeed correct in what's happening and there is training to break through.

This has indeed made it impossible for me to use google translate to check my work, incidentally! Because even if I get something wrong, google translate still just quietly translates as though I hadn't!

I actually, hold on-

This has a typo in it! I didn't notice until we were going over the homework today, but that き should be a ぎ, like so:

Screenshot 2024-09-06 at 03-03-41 Google Translate.png

You actually can still tell because the pronunciation bit under the text has a little bit of weird nonsense in it, but if you don't notice that? Like you may not notice you forgot the ゛on one of your mora? Then there's no way to know you're doing anything wrong

It's very frustrating, and I may have to resort to using one of the LLM-based grammar checkers for Japanese translation that are floating around. Which, like, using google is probably not that much better in terms of like environmental and social impact and whatnot, but it's the principle of the thing. I don't want to have to do that, but I am a person with flaws and I make mistakes sometimes, and need some way of double-checking my work. I just wish there were something I could trust to not be hallucinating when I did it
