I enjoy these Sweeney Todd characterisation thoughts! And the LSOH thoughts! In addition to what you're saying, I think the way the sets worked really helped the movie feel more, cohesive? In that they had access to an enormous studio and just, built the city in it, and I think that gave it a real solid grounding to make it less immersion-breaking despite all the singing and dancing and talking plants. The practical effects in general are superb (as would be expected from Frank Oz and the Jim Henson Company), and I think there's something to the fact that if given an infinite budget, you could almost just re-create the movie as a stage show, there's nothing inherently movie about the movie aside from the camera angles

And yeah, too many movie musicals these days are ashamed of being musicals and it sucks. Tom Hooper Must Be Stopped.

I think my ideal Johanna is probably a middleground between Cosette-style innocent babe and Mags-level unhinged.

Sophie did mention she likes the idea of a scheming Johanna, as in one who is deliberately clinging to Antony in order to escape her circumstances (which is incredibly fair, to be clear), and I think that would be a fun interpretation. Definitely adds some additional substance to when she takes the gun from Antony and shoots the psych ward guy, like boy gimme that if you're gonna be a little baby about it

Oh, I would /love/ to see a performance with this interpretation. I largely write her character off as filling a niche but not being a /person/ and I'd like to see a version that makes her more real.

Also, I'm also on the side of Antony being romantic, but in a way that is so overbearing and all-consuming he ends up back around at posessive in the gross way.

Turkey day!

I work today (it's me and literally only two other people covering all of Cook County, cool!) so I have a chicken pot pie in the oven to bring in with me. One of my other coworkers is making apple cobbler, and the third is ............. a bit of an odd duck, so I'm not sure what she's doing. In any case, once the pot pie is done I'm going to set it out to cool and try to squeeze a run in. Today is my Friday equivalent, so I am looking forward to a weekend of rest and video games after I survive a holiday first responder shift. Been getting back into Valheim a little bit, and am also cleaning up sidequests and ephemera after completing Shadowbringers in bungame. Oh, and Greggo is going to Wales for most of next month so there's a raid encounter I'd like to clear with him before he does that, since I doubt our schedules will align much while he's six hours in the future.

ALSO I JUST REALIZED!!! crimmey time!!!! I always set up my Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving, because I am one of Those People and have stopped trying to pretend I'm not, so I'm looking forward to that.

I guess that's it for now, lemme go babysit the pot pie so I don't burn the crust

bonus: Mags rolls out of bed and immediately slams a Red Bull

also if Leon does have coffee he would have it black, no cream or sugar, and would drink it while it was approximately 900000 degrees kelvin

I mean let's be honest this is basically just a picture book for grown-ups but I enjoyed it! The artwork was nice and glossy and beautiful, I will definitely be yoinking the Underdark stuff for mine and Sophie's D&D machinations, and it is how I learned that Drizzt Do'Urden is a short king and one of his swords is named Twinkle

The temps very suddenly dropped a few days ago and I! have been! struggling!

I think I just have to survive today's single digit weather and then it goes back up to slightly more seasonable temps (30s/40s, which I've lived in Chicago long enough now to find acceptable). It's really made it hard to do anything other than Keep Warm the past few days; I just wasn't ready for this level of winter, and I am not being even a little brave about it. Right now I should be exercising or doing other good grown-up tasks but I just want to hide in front of my space heater bluhhhhh

You know, neither of my parents ever taught me how to be a person; I had to learn that on my own, and it was hard and embarrassing and painful

But I've done a pretty damn good job 😤
