I have a solitaire app I play on my phone, and if my phone forgets that I'm in the middle of a game it gets counted in my stats as "abandoned". I very extremely much hate this, so when it happens I take a screenshot of the startup screen and then clear the game's data so I can start from scratch with a clean slate and no lies about my commitment to sparkle motion solitaire

I didn't abandon the game, the game abandoned me

Anyway, my last run got up to 545 wins before that happened, which I'm pretty proud of. Some day I'll add up the totals in all the screenshots and see how many games I've actually won

If web design were sensible sites would read image metadata before loading and set aside space for the image's size so as things load in content doesn't jump around all over the god damn place

The web doesn't take nearly enough advantage of image metadata, frankly. We'd also be storing image alt text in there if we were smart and had any forethought at all

Tonight! I!

  • Cleaned the coffee maker
  • Brought all the dishes out of my room
  • Organized ash's snack/breakfast cupboard
  • Put leftovers away
  • Cleaned the counters and stovetop
  • Rinsed dishes and put them next to the sink
  • Had a cup of coffee and ate dinner while watching a youtube

Now I'm gonna go to bed

Something I was running into with the Japanese lessons is that I just do not have the attention span to focus on it for half an hour, so I've started doing it in fifteen minute blocks instead. Ideally twice a day to make up for it, once in the morning and once before bed, but it's still better than nothing to just get one in. It's been working well! I can generally pay attention to one thing for a fifteen minute stretch, and the shorter period also means it's easier for me to take my notes during it.

The lessons are starting to get into somewhat more complicated stuff -- it's been giving me sort of 'this is the simple way to say this' and now it's building on that into 'here's how to say it without sounding like a toddler'. I am stumbling a bit, but that's to be expected

An interesting Japanese thing I'm gathering is that ... there's distinctions between describing your own personal, internal experience and in describing other people's experiences. There's a way to say "I want to eat", that you don't use when referring to other people because you're not supposed to talk about what other people want in the same way. So you say "I want to eat" but ask "Are you going to eat?". Something about making assumptions about other people's desires. It's interesting! And I think is why Japanese as a language is so pro-subject-drop

I have been playing the Made in Abyss game and I will have some thoughts about it later, but in relation to all this I'm playing it with the Japanese audio and I'm excited to be able to say that I'm picking up a very little bit of it, despite the not great sound quality. I still can't follow, like, sentences at all, but I hear words and understand some of them

Today I showered and did not a whole lot else. I'm going to continue doing that with some internet videos (ash got us a subscription to dropout so I've been watching some of their shows) and some video games.

A game where your name has a limited number of uses. If your name runs out, you don't have one and have to find a new one. Not giving your name to people (preventing them from using it) means they think you don't want to interact with them, and so won't. Not having a name also means you can't interact with people, because you're not a person

A game about navigating relationships, about the necessity of making yourself vulnerable

I've been feeling burnt out on the medium of podcasts in general, which is annoying

Remember remember remember! The assholes are the loud minority!

They have a disproportionate amount of power but by god more people are kind. Most people are kind.

Here's a fun fact about Japanese, which is that a casual way of saying "yes" sounds like "ehh", and this hasn't thrown me (yet) but it is a thing I have to consciously think about because it sounds so inherently negative to my ear

A youtuber I was a fan of has been disappointing -- I won't go super into it because I don't want to dwell on either this or Hogwarts Legacy stuff, but he played the game and got a sponsorship from WB to upload the video of him doing so. The fandom immediately became a cesspool of bigots, and the youtuber in question posted the most bare-bones, vague apology and I've decided that I don't think that's enough so I'm going to stop watching him. I'd hoped that he was going to post a more concrete video apology and just wanted to get the text one out there sooner for damage control, but as of today there is no more from him. Just a real bummer all around.

Welp, going on a month now of no further statements/apologies/anything at all from the youtuber, so I'm officially giving up on him. There were a few people hanging out in his reddit trying to suggest he at bare minimum link the apology to anywhere other than that reddit, like in the description of the video in question, or his community tab, or make a video just about that -- or to at slightly less than bare minimum actually apologise to the people hurt instead of the dishwater vague apology he gave that both-sides-ed the issue. But they also seem to have given up, I haven't seen any of it in the past week.

Hope he enjoys his new community full of terfs and transphobes, since he's apparently okay with people dogpiling on anyone in his comments who expresses any kind of support for trans people or negative feelings about JKR
