Prices continue to climb, and in particular my soda has gotten very expensive -- I use soda to self-medicate ADHD but I also just really enjoy the taste and the carbonation, and I can just as easily get caffeine pills as drink a soda, so I've been mulling over the idea of getting a carbonator and making my own fizzy drinks, for a while. First though I'll probably try a store brand and see if I like that any, depending on the price. Entirely possible that's also getting expensive.

So I mentioned I've been working on politeness/formality registers for teket lau -- I've been having trouble finding examples of things languages do for this other than English and Japanese, so I reached out to a linguist on tumblr to ask for any examples they'd have on hand, or any resources they could point me to for further study. Seems like this is an understudied field, because the linguist didn't have anything for me and turned it over to their followers, who also didn't really have anything for me--

(annoyed shoutout to the people who heard me say 'I can't find examples outside of what English and Japanese does' and suggested to me the two things that English and Japanese do)

I refuse to believe that pronoun change and question format are the only strategies out there, there have to be languages that do some wild shit. But if they haven't been documented, or at least not documented in a way I'd have access to them,

Question format I've been mulling over but if I can avoid using it, I want to avoid using it. I definitely don't want to do the standard hedging form of it (make questions longer/indirect -- "open the window" → "could you open the window" → "would you be willing to open the window" etc), I both don't like that it's so common and it doesn't fit the design philosophy I have for the language. I do have a very robust pronoun/referential system now, but I want something that changes how they speak. But without overcomplicating the language -- overcomplicating it will be perfect for hedgespeak, but teket needs to be simpler than that

Hold on a package just got delivered

The Over the Garden Wall soundtrack arrived! The colour on the record is not as dramatic as I'd thought it would be, but I didn't exactly get it for looking at, so that's no matter

The packaging is lovely, comes with a booklet with both sheet music and lyrics, which is neat. Sounds great on my player so far. I need to hook my fancy headphones up to it eventually and see how it sounds through those

The cable on my fancy headphones + the extender ash accidentally bought yonks ago happens to be just long enough that I can listen to the record player with them while sitting in bed, so yay for that

An interesting politeness/formality thing that I also don't actually want to use would be tone indicators -- a grammatical feature that says 'I'm kidding', 'I'm being sarcastic', 'I'm being serious', etc, that you use with people you're less familiar with and drop with people you're close to

I don't think there are natural languages that would do that but there could be an analogous method by way of evidential markers -- features which clarify, for example, how you know something ('I heard this secondhand', 'I saw it with my own eyes', 'I don't actually know this and just think it's plausible' etc)

Something about clarifying methods, that get dropped when you're close enough to a person for the marker to just be 'just trust me, dude'
