Have some teket notes:
Names:
When you’re born, you aren’t given a name but are referred to by descriptors. These descriptors can sometimes follow you for life, as nicknames and pet names.
After 2-3 years, you are considered a child and both graduate into the 2nd noun class and are given a first name, which embodies the potential your parents and tribe wish you to have. This is often done with the aid of a stormtaster
When you are ready to join the Hunters and become an adult, you participate in a naming ceremony and take a second name for yourself, which embodies your identity and how you wish to be seen
At this point your name consists of your first, child-name; your second, adult-name; and your family name. Your name can also more fully be considered to contain your parents’ origin family names, and the origin names of their parents, and so on.
Examining the full names of any ketal who wish to create a new tribe together is the responsibility of a stormtaster — they will use the full list of origin families to ensure the ketal are not too closely related, and will judge the “shape” of the names for prosperity and good fortune.
Once the ketal have been judged safe to split off into a new tribe together, the origin family tribes will come together to celebrate and name the new tribe
Infant: Descriptor
Child: Firstname [origin-names] familyname
Adult: Firstname secondname [origin-names] familyname
Married adult: Firstname secondname [origin-names] [familyname] new-familyname
I am born into the Thania tribe. I could be called ‘Blue-ear’, ‘Skinny’, ‘Littlefoot’, etc, as suits the whims of whoever is talking about me
I survive infancy and am rewarded with the name Eivet, because my family wants me to grow up to be a great storyteller. My short name is Eivet Thania, my long name is Eivet Vhei Niata Gene Citha (etc etc back to the beginning of time) Thania
I survive childhood and am given the opportunity to name myself — I choose Eskeir, naming myself after a legendary figure because I want to embody that character’s strength. My name is Eivet Eskeir (etc etc) Thania
I meet someone(s) I want to start a family with. The stormtaster examines our names and deems us compatible, so plans are made to split us off from our respective tribes. Our families come together and name us Liasa in the hopes we will be bright and healthy as gods. My name is Eivet Eskeir (etc etc) Thania Liasa
My significant other gives me a secret name, Rhivet, because they love my generosity. My name is Eivet Eskeir (etc etc) Thania Liasa Rhivet
I have also by this point accumulated some titles befitting whatever role I have in a given tribe.
It is exceedingly rare for someone’s full name to be used — names are not generally considered a list, as they are for humans. Less that I am “Eivet Eskeir Thania Liasa” and more that I am Eivet, and Eskeir, and Thania, and Liasa. You don’t call me Eskeir Thania, but whichever name befits our relationship and the roles we are both currently playing.
I do want to pick an adposition to put between the family names, like ‘name of family of family of family, etc’.
(NB that ketal family units do not map 1:1 onto human family units, and the use of the term “parents” here is not wholly accurate, but will serve for now.)
