I would love so much if programs would wait for me to finish typing my search terms before trying to load results

In general can we stop treating bandwidth and RAM and &c like they're infinite resources again

Tangential to the above:

I love having fast internet and being able to do things that I was never able to do on dialup, but also I genuinely think the world is a worse place for fast internet being so ubiquitous. Imagine how many more people would touch grass if they had to wait twenty minutes for their video to load. Imagine how much less doomscrolling there'd be if you had to wait for every new page of hot takes. Imagine how much less misinformation there'd be if it wasn't able to reach millions of people in a fraction of a second!

When I was on dialup I had to be really sure that whatever I was spending time on, on the internet, was worth it. Coincidentally, I then spent the vast majority of my time looking at and making art and hanging out with my friends

Today! Helped ash move the orange tree (it wasn't getting enough sun), got his help re-hanging my curtains (they've been almost-falling-down since we moved in and Cael has Not been helping matters), read a chunk of Sideshow to him (we have like 50 pages left!), and watched V/H/S/Beyond (anthology horror; had a couple really good segments, a couple stupid ones, and the rest were alright -- the framing was especially meh for this one). For dinner ash roasted pork inside a pineapple and it turned out good but there's definitely ideas to do it better next time.

Oz spent the majority of the night out there with us and in particular near the end of the evening stayed curled up next to me and even slept a little. This is the first time she's done that outside my room in years and it's so nice for her to have been comfortable enough to do that. I hope she continues

Oh, I also cut my bangs off so all my mohawk is roughly the same length -- the stripe was getting to a length that looked stupid with the bangs the length they were, so. Now the whole thing can grow out at the same rate

I also recently switched out the summer door-curtain for the winter one, which will trap heat in my room better. And while re-hanging the curtains I switched them so the black side is facing out and the white side is facing in -- my room is So much Brighter now. And a couple nights ago I redid my bedding for winter -- which takes So much longer when you have to remove a cat from the bed every thirty seconds. But that includes my electric blanket, so I'm ready for it to get cold at night.

Just broke off writing this post to play with Oz for a few minutes so I may as well just end it here

A great trope is when a story follows two POVs that you think are happening simultaneously but then it turns out - Twist! - that they are completely separated in time and one of the POVs is actually dealing with the aftermath of the other POV

Oh my god.

So scrivener wasn't working. For whatever reason all of my projects looked like this:

Screenshot_2024-11-12_02-04-48.png

Trying to type in it yielded no apparent change and prior projects had no visible text. I'd run into it a bit ago and thought it was just one or two projects, and I knew from then that the text all still existed in the project's files, it just wasn't showing up in scrivener itself for some reason. But, today, I went into my conlang folder and found the same thing had happened to it -- and to every project I tried from there, and a new project (pictured above). Obviously a little upsetting but not life-ruining -- I figured scrivener itself was no longer compatible with my computer (for like a decade now scrivener has been openly kind of hostile to linux users and I have been running it via a port made by some random person out of the kindness of their heart, but that sort of thing only works for so long as random people have the time and energy to keep them working)

Anyway, so I looked around for alternatives and tried various other installation methods and in the end spent a couple hours on that and couldn't get it to work. So I went digging around in the "working" installation to see if there was some weird setting somewhere, or

Long story short (too late) -- every single colour option in 'appearance' had been changed to that weird gray. The text color, the background color, link colors, highlight color, every single one except the background for the 'Binder' header which had been changed to black (resulting in that weird 'the graphics have been corrupted'-core gradient).

I reset it all to default and it's working fine now but what the fuck. What the fuck? What the fuck.

Not enough sleep last night, braindead all day. Woke up with my alarm at 2 PM (after waking up periodically all night and morning and &c) and pretty much immediately jumped into doing pre-class studying. Got that all sorted, got set up for class, and then got into class where nothing much of note happened. Tomorrow I have three pages of homework and a vocabulary quiz.

After that I hung out with ash while he made dinner and read more of Sideshow to him -- we have forty pages left. We watched a Drawfee while we ate and then we played video games. We started Ghost Master a couple nights ago because a board game we want to play reminded me of it, and we've been having fun with that despite the level we were on being frustratingly specific in how it wants you to beat it. But it's beat, and we unlocked three new ghosts to play with, and two new levels to check out the next time we fire it up.

Dave and I played some more Stardew, and had a very productive few days on the farm. We got a Water Obelisk built and we're going to work toward the Desert Obelisk. We're doing a bean quest for Mr Qi that Dave is confident we'll be able to manage with his seed maker system. And I both got everything set up to try to get some sturgeon roe out of a fishpond to make caviar out of and then immediately afterward had the opportunity (which I of course took) to just buy caviar from the night market. So the joja bundle is done and I have a sturgeon pond I need to figure out what I want to do with.

Have spent the rest of the night just reading the internet, honestly. I want to poke at some conlang stuff but I probably don't have brain. Sleep soon, maybe.

There's been a sound happening outside at night that is 100% going to fuck up my sleep and trigger my misophonia

I hope to god it's not just, a thing that's going to be happening now forever

Very curious if this is going to touch at all on my current theory that one of the reasons so many people are having trouble sleeping is because every god damn electronic device these days thinks it's okay to fill your room with always-on super-bright LEDs
