I have a bike! As predicted I have not ridden it yet, but everything seems to be working. I am so so so relieved they sent me the correct bike -- when I settled on this model I was a little disappointed, because I didn't really like how it looked, until I saw they had started offering this colour scheme and fell in love with it. I hate all of the other colours, so if they sent me one of them by mistake it would have to be a whole thing. But we don't need to worry about that because it didn't happen.

Later today I'll go do a post-assembly pass on it and make sure everything's screwed on tight and in-order, and find and jot down the serial number. It has in fact rained all day, and plans on continuing to do so, so no riding yet. Tomorrow! And we'll test getting it into and out of ash's car.

Very excited!

Started on Erik's and ash's Christmas presents tonight! Spent about an hour on them before I called it, will work more on them tomorrow. I will try to actually remember to take pictures of the results this time

I have ridden the bike! I was out for, uh, forty minutes about? It is going to take a lot of getting used to, even given that I have not ridden a bike in almost twenty years, just in how the motor responds and everything. One potentially very dangerous issue that I need to figure out how to mitigate is that when the motor has kicked up, there's no longer any resistance on the pedals, so if I stop pedalling at that point it's very easy for the pedals to leave my feet.

I need to get used to how the throttle works (difficult or impossible to hold it in a way that just maintains a speed), and just in general get comfortable with being on a bike again, and get comfortable moving at higher speeds on that bike.

Good sign: after forty minutes riding all over the neighbourhood, my legs aren't tired at all. My arms are, and that's both going to require readjusting seat height, and also just, getting used to holding my arms up for that long. I did my best to not hold everything tense

It was fun, and will definitely be doable for running errands and also just, getting out and about. Fresh air and exercise.

I do have been stressed about how to keep it safe while inside the store and it occurred to me last night that I could just, fold it up and put it in the shopping cart, and take it in with me. I don't know if the store would give me grief over doing that, but I hope they wouldn't because it only weighs like as much as a 7-8 year old child and people put their kids in carts all the time without issue. Shopping carts can hold a surprising amount of weight! Like, adult men have been known to ride around in them. So it's not like the bike would hurt the cart in any way.

I do have one heavy-duty kryptonite chain lock and I plan on getting a heavy-duty u-lock when I'm able, and I also plan on replacing all of the quick-release whatevers on the bike with not that (people are known to steal bike seats just to be assholes). There's only so much you can do, though, and I'm aware that right now it's a nice bike that would be attractive to thieves.

Anyway! I forgot to remove the battery when I stopped riding, which I intend to always do so I can keep said battery in a climate-controlled environment, so I'm going to go do that.

And ash and I have figured out a place for the bike to live in the garage for now, and have a medium-term and long-term plan for a better place for it to live. Just need to take care of the stuff that's currently in the way

We have successfully loaded and unloaded the bike into and out of ash's car! It is predictably a huge pain in the ass and we're going to see if there aren't ways to make it a bit easier, but it's also very doable

So tomorrow I will bike, train, bus, and bike to the bank and dad's house, then get a ride home with ash
