This book has annoyed me enough that I doubt I'll finish it, despite being close to the end, and obviously my first step was to go onto the internet to find people who agree with me and man do I despise the tone reviewers use when they want to sound like intellectual edgelords

I actually thought the writing was fine in that it didn't bother me (I've noticed it's trendy to complain about "purple prose" right now, when sometimes it's just-- the writer has described things), but the pacing was terrible and the main character kept making such stupid decisions that I couldn't stand it. There was no sense of urgency and the writer really struggled to figure out how to have the main character interact with conflict; there are two almost identical instances of him having to defend himself by killing another person, and in both cases he has the same crisis about it. Time #2 I should learn something new about the character, like that they've steeled themselves to necessary violence or they've figured out how to resolve conflicts without the violence (one's not a better choice than the other but, like, pick one).

anyway I respect the hustle but this is my nail in the coffin for self-published fantasy, y'all need editors or at least some beta readers or something goddamn
