Which is more wet?
・damp
・moist

#hedgepost

damp, 100%

To me, "damp" means something is fully saturated with Wet, whereas "moist" can just be a surface layer of Wet

Honestly. Honestly? Honestly. I actually really like my laptop's keyboard. It's one of my favourite features of it, it's nicely clacky and responsive, it honestly doesn't feel like a membrane keyboard. There's a springiness to the keys that makes it really nice to type on

Okay in comparison to the new keyboard it does feel kind of mushy

Speaking of supplements, the CBD oil really seems to be doing Oz good -- she is generally less nervous (though still nervous, and still does not like the other cats being near her, which is to be expected), spends more time outside of my room, and she is still not eating enough but she is eating consistently, which I consider a very good sign. She's playing pretty regularly again, chasing her tail or batting toys around, though both for very short periods, which is also to be expected. She also looks much healthier, still too skinny and her muscles still seem somewhat atrophied, but not as scrawny and her coat seems healthy.

Finally back into learning Inform 7 -- an interactive fiction (infocom-like) programming language and IDE -- and fell into the usual rabbit-hole of 'can I use this to make SnowRPG'. SnowRPG has a very specific requirement in whatever I make it in, which is that I want to be able to release more content to the game without breaking people's save files, allowing them to continue playing their characters after updates. Unfortunately, Inform does not allow this, breaking saves after any update whatsoever -- as far as I can tell it functionally considers any new release as a new, different game from whatever released before it, so saves cannot cross over at all. It's like trying to tell Skyrim to load your Morrowind save.

Anyway, so that's out, though it is an intriguing concept and I may think about doing some, sort of game vignettes set in Snowtowniverse in that format. But for SnowRPG itself it seems like my best option remains Twine, or programming it directly into the browser myself. God I miss Storynexus, god I'm annoyed at Failbetter.

Meanwhile, I've been thinking the linguist-goes-to-kuris story might make an interesting IF text adventure, so when I'm done learning the basics I'm going to see about starting that.

Good lord

Ran into some nasty bugs in the Inform 7 IDE that affect saving, so, like, kind of important to be fixed or to find workarounds -- one of them the program can't figure out how to load properly from a USB drive (so solution is to keep the files on my hard-drive, which is annoying but doable), the other is that it doesn't let you select folders when doing a save-as so you have to save it into a top-level folder (the solution is to "bookmark" the folder you want it in so you can select that as a top-level folder)

Anyway I went looking for the bug report forums for it, assuming that it would be like, a github page or something, but no they use Jira which is Apparently a Facking Nightmare

To start with it doesn't let you view anything unless you register an account, and then it wouldn't let me register an account, and then when I finally got it to give me an account it made me jump through all these hoops to get to the actual forum content, and then the UI is awful and confusing and overcomplicated

This whole thing is a Mess and doesn't bode particularly well. Gonna keep messing with it, and there are alternatives to the IDE if it becomes an actual problem, but jeez.

An alright day! Woke up, hung out for a bit, went for my walk and checked on the roses -- there was some more rust to cut off, and the Joseph's Coat has more black spot again I need to take care of. Then a few Arcadia recordings, some internet and reading more about Inform, then ash dyed my hair, then I started playing 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors which I'll talk about some more in the future, then dinner and youtube, and then ash and I played Nord & Bert Couldn't Make Head or Tail of It, which is a pun-based infocom game, until my keyboard died and ash went to bed. I just washed the dye out of my hair an hour ago and now I'm playing more video game and eating more dinner. I need to do the chore list before I go to sleep, but aside from that I'm pretty off the hook!

It's spring break! No class today! So I've taken the day off and let myself catch up on sleep -- I've been being awful about getting enough for a week or so, so it was nice to go back to bed for a few hours.

New keycaps and switches arrived, so I spent a little time messing with those! I did try a different switch and different keycaps on the spacebar and all of it has the same unwanted sound to it, so I'll need to mess with some more drastic mods to see if I can't fix it. I do think it might be that the spacebar is just so large and hollow and maybe filling it with something will help, but I also think it might just be the acoustics of the case and it might help to put down some foam or a tape mod.

I am test-driving a different set of keycaps with a different profile than the others -- I'm not sure if I like typing on it, yet. I've kept some of the keys the old keycaps, because again I don't know if I'm going to keep these on, and I also kind of like the effect of the mismatched caps? I might keep it like this!

I promise I will actually get some real pictures eventually. Here's some off-the-cuff pics to show what I'm talking about about the new keycaps though

You can see they're taller than the other keycaps, and they have a nice divot in the top. They sound nicer (bigger keycaps = deeper clack) but it'll take getting used to typing on them, and I'm not sure how I feel about them in this case in particular.

Finished a run of 999 yesterday but it's the kind of game that necessitates multiple playthroughs -- have to new game plus to get any answers to the questions raised by the plot, so I started a second run and will probably mostly do that today.

Oh I do need to set up the sprinkler system again and make sure that's running. I'll do that later in the week, though, when it's sunny again. It's gloomy today and we're due rain today and tomorrow

Alright, I'm going to go do other things. Like eat lunch and play video games

Okay! I get to sit down for a little bit now

Today I: Checked to make sure the sprinklers are working (they are) and scheduled them to run four times a week; watered all of my plants (including the aloe); cut some more fungus off the pool rose; took my humidifier apart and gave it a deep clean (hopefully without breaking it); picked my birdfeeder back up and threw out the beans that spilled out of it (though it's supposed to be Very Windy again soon so I should probably just go ahead and lay it back down); removed the paper from the "filters" for the humidifier to maybe do some jerryrigging them into reusable "filters"

The idea is to install some velcro onto the frame, sew some velcro onto cheap washcloths, and then I can remove those and put them in the wash when they get gross and I won't have to keep buying new filters and adding more plastic to thelandfill.

The humidifier is posing a logistics issue as a whole, though, in that the cats like to sit on it and when they do that they drop hair and litter into it, and that's gross and I don't want it humidifying gross water into my room. Not sure what I can do about that, though, except I guess move it to a less high-traffic spot in my room and then scold them when they jump on it.

ash got the fungicide for the plants yesterday, so tomorrow I'm going to try to apply it to said plants. There's also a logistics issue there, though, because I'm supposed to dilute to -- I think 2.5 teaspoons per 4 gallons of water, and I don't want to make four gallons of it so I'm going to have to math out how to do a smaller amount and ugh. Ugh.

Yesterday I picked out an accent set for the keyboard and put them on, they're a very nice understated beige skylight set that matches the keyboard case very well, but the legends on them let RGB light through so they light up along with whatever pattern I set and it looks very cool and nice. They're also a little taller than the set that came with the keyboard, so match the black keys a little better, and they sound very nice. Very happy with this selection! I did discover one of the switches is sticking, though, so I'm going to go ahead and swap all of them out for the holy pandas when I take it apart. I just need to get a roll of wide electrical tape, and probably go ahead and get some lube &c though I don't currently have any plans on lubing anything. It'd be good to have a just-in-case though because I definitely will want to use it at some point.

I got another couple endings of 999 and now I'm going to work on knocking out the ones I haven't found yet; I've also been continuing my read through of the documentation for Inform -- currently toying with the idea of a series of games doing repair in Too-Longing, that could be fun and interesting. The linguist game I still have on a front-burner but I'm not sure it'll be feasible to start with -- the actual linguistics parts of the game will make it pretty complicated to implement, I think. We'll see, I still have a lot of reading to do.

Yeah, the executive dysfunction/inertia is definitely better. It's much easier to just think, 'I should do x' and then get up and do x -- for some things. For others they're still difficult. And this was an issue before winter, too, so I don't think it can be wholly attributed to the season changing. It could just be brain chemicals doing their inscrutable thing... but, I mean, vitamins &c are part of brain chemicals. So who knows. Worth keeping at it, I think

I've double-checked toxicity symptoms and safe upper limits for everything, and I should be safe to take them even granting that I'm going to be getting all of them also elsewhere in my diet -- except the magnesium is apparently a touch high for a daily pill, so I may adjust that when I run out. Unfortunately a lot of them have very vague toxicity symptoms that are just part of being an adult human, like 'stomach upset' and 'headaches', but if I get anything persistent I'll stop taking the pills and see if it gets better
