Summarizing the information in Inform's documentation both for ease of future reference and to make sure I understand what I'm reading as I plow through this
Chapter 1: Welcome to Inform
-Information on how to use the IDE, the different functions of the different tabs/pages. Notable: The Index lists all objects that exist in the game, organized by type, including a map of the world; the Skein is a web of every action taken in testing -- note also that the Skein holds onto actions even if parts of the game have been deleted, note also that it does not include automatically-produced actions (eg through 'test me' commands)Chapter 2: The Source Text
-A gist of the programming language; verbs, nouns, prepositions, how to put them together in a way the computer understands. Best practices to make finding and fixing bugs easier for you when they start popping up (include headers, so the IDE will point to them when it reports a bug). How to install extensions, some settings options and "use options", how to create an options.txt file that will load certain settings and commands automatically in every game file (somewhat confusingly, instructions are located in 2.13 Administering Classroom Use)Chapter 3: Things
-Nouns and their properties, creating custom properties; properties inherent to certain types of noun and the limits to which you can mess with those propertiesChapter 4: Kinds
-Creating and referring to categories of noun; setting default values; (frankly largely a continuation of Chapter 3)Chapter 5: Text
-Substituting and formatting textChapter 6: Descriptions
-Adjectives, how they interact with nouns and each other, how to use them to point to specific groups of nounsChapter 7: Basic Actions
-Verbs, specifically of the kinds made by the player; how to change how the game reacts to them, how to get a little complicated with themChapter 8: Change
-Variables and setting them; moving objects and the player to different locations and into and out of play; reporting on variable status; changing ui elements (limited though they are in vanilla Inform); a couple sections on randomness
As an aside, Sophie and I made the Pompeii honey cake several dates ago --
-- and it's what jumped first to my mind at the thought of "spice cake," it was absurdly tasty and I think you'd like it, though!
Interesting! I'll have to try that when I can get the ingredients

"I'll just get through this ending before I go to bed", I said
Little did I know this ending is almost an hour long

Up late, naturally, and ended up sleeping in until about 1:30 in the afternoon -- shocked the cats let me! Cael has become much less food-focused and largely just kind of deals if there isn't food in his bowl when he goes to check it, though he does have a habit of taking it out on the other animals if he's hungry and doesn't have food (happens sometimes with him still growing and occasionally needing his rations upped). Oz gets hungry in the middle of the night, so I keep her food in my nightstand so I can pull it out when she decides she wants it, and that did happen early this morning but aside from that. Cats just slept with me until I woke up
Have done some yard chores. Hung up some bells in my tree -- they keep blowing into our yard somehow from a neighbour's (I assume)? And I kept meaning to do that, and now I have. Watered half of my plants, sprayed them for aphids, and cut a handful of rust-infected leaves off the pool rose -- I didn't get all of it, I'll do more tomorrow. If it weren't so windy I'd spray it again
Took a walk around the pool. It's very warm out today! I have 73 on my phone, which is downright hot compared to recent temperatures. The pool is still cold, of course, but it feels nice to dip my feet or hands in for a few seconds.
Tomorrow is an arcadia recording in the afternoon and then ash and I want to get into the city for a scavenger hunt thing (a leprechaun hunt). This weekend is also some general St Patrick's Day stuff in the area, so should be some stuff to See while we're out. Sunday will be yardwork, so a little bit of a full weekend. And then next week classes will be in session again -- I want to do some studying before then to refresh my memory, and review some of the recordings I have of the actual class. I have not been keeping on top of the anki deck and I don't know if I'll get back to it
Oh someone is livestreaming a Q&A this evening and I want to watch that, and probably record it to watch the bits I won't be able to watch live
Okay! I should read some Inform docs, and hang out until the evening comes
Yesterday! Did an Arcadia recording and then immediately ash and I headed out to the city to hunt for leprechauns! It's an activity the city does for kids around St Patrick's day to boost business in old sac, and as mentioned they also had some general stuff down there, too -- a lot of live music and suchlike. On our way down there, our train shut down for about a minute, which was honestly not very exciting but was abnormal (until summer, when it will be a regular occurrence probably.)
It was very, very crowded! A real taste of what the city will probably be like if they succeed in making this a tourist hotspot, which as always I have mixed feelings about. And, as the game is for small children and not adults, the hunt was very easy and the solution to the "riddle" was a bit unsatisfying -- but it was fun, and nice to get out and do something. I did have to go into most of the stores to find the leprechaun, which I wasn't expecting but should have, and I didn't put my mask on for the 'run in and out as fast as possible' errand, so hopefully I have not contracted something. There was one store that I couldn't find the leprechaun in, and then the last stop was a busy restaurant and I didn't want to try to go in to find that leprechaun, so we only found ... five of the eight leprechauns.
Afterwards, we wanted to go get something to drink (like, a tea or a smoothie, not an alcohol) but couldn't find anyplace nearby that we wanted to try and the jamba in the commons was super busy, so we just went home. Once home, I started to get a migraine and by bedtime it had fully manifested into completely awful.
ash and I have started playing through 999 -- I finished the last ending I needed the night before last, and because I have been skipping all seen scenes instead of reading them multiple times, I'm excited to play it with ash and see everything fresh. I also was playing the NDS version, which is different from the steam version in some ways (at least one changed puzzle, and a scene that the DS was able to do with two visible screens at once that the steam version has to just swap back and forth on -- I was told that You Gotta play the NDS version for that reason and my opinion on the necessity of that is 'meh'.)
Speaking of, 999 is a Spike Chunsoft game (made before they were Spike Chunsoft) in which a group of people are abducted into a strange, closed-off space and forced to play a game, that will kill them if they do it wrong. If this sounds familiar to you it's because it's Dangan Ronpa, it's just an early version of Dangan Ronpa. Like, they're not kids and they're not intended to be killing each other, and Zero is not very much like Monokuma (wait until Zero III in the second game for that), but like. It's Dangan Ronpa.
It's also fun, and has very stupid characters and a very stupid plot, but this is to be expected and honestly is part of the fun. It largely makes replaying it as painless as possible, which is important because you will be playing it a minimum of six times to get all the endings, and if you're not playing it with a guide you will probably be playing it more than that. But you can fast-forward through dialogue you've seen before, and all of the puzzles are pretty easy to blast through when you know the solutions. And getting all the endings is definitely worth it. In all I'm pretty impressed with how the game is implemented
So I also started the second game last night, and that's also fun so far and, yes, also very dumb. But it seems to have a hint system that you can choose how much the other characters in the game baby you, which is appreciated, because Lort do I hate having characters be like 'That looks like a screwdriver! Didn't we see something we needed to unscrew earlier? Maybe you should try using that on the coffee maker" like just, shut up. Shut up forever, please.
Today I did a little gardening, including spraying the pool rose down with more fungicide, and consequently I also took a shower like an hour or so ago. I did decide to just, not wash my slippers and hope I didn't get any fungicide on them, but I did throw my clothes in a bag again to be washed when I can get around to that.
I'm going to go eat a lunch and then figure out what else I'm going to do with my time today. I do need to study at some point, get ready for class starting up again tomorrow. Our next homework assignment(s) unlocked, due next Sunday, and I took a peek at them and boy howdy the difficulty level for this stuff has Jumped. Hopefully after Monday and/or Wednesday's class I'm more confident on that, but I also want to get the assigned reading done
